Rip-offs and copy-cats are nothing new to the mobile game industry. But the latest Pokémon GO wannabe is something special: it was made by Chinese game giant Tencent.
Tencent is arguably one of the biggest game publishers, producers, and all around company for video games in China. They’ve gained publishing control of countless games in China, such as PUBG, League of Legends, Monster Hunter, and more. Now the company has released “Catch the Demon Together,” a new mobile AR game bearing a dangerously close similarity to Pokémon GO.
“‘Catch the demon together’ is Tencent’s first AR exploration mobile game! Let you invade the world in the real world, explore the world, discover and collect the demon around you.
The soul beads seal the demon, and the rich and diverse, strange demon spirits are in the bag. The real scene captures the demon, features the battle, guards the platform, and socializes offline. Royal spirit, come together to catch the demon!”

As you might have guessed, the player is tasked with traversing a real-life map, looking for a wide variety of cutesy demon creatures. Players can gain materials at designated stops, and even place them in arena like locations for battle. Did I mention they have three colored teams you can join?
Normally, copy cats are small scale develops of no name. This is the first time a major corporation is imitating the game to such a degree. Don’t ask me how this will work legally, China’s rules are different and Tencent is a very powerful company.
Me, being the American I am, will stick to Pokémon GO if that’s alright. Still, if you want to check the game out, here’s its product page. I hope you can read simplified Chinese.
