DeNA, a Japanese Mobile Portal provider, has announced plans with The Pokémon Company for a new Pokémon mobile game set to release before March 2020.
While they’ve been in the business since 2012, DeNA cites their relationship with Nintendo as “the starting point for this opportunity with The Pokémon Company.” The company played a part in Miitomo, Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, and the upcoming Mario Kart Tour.
With Mario Kart Tour still in development, DeNA reassured investors that this new announcement will not hinder the progress of their current dedications.
This is good news for DeNA. The company saw a 14.7 percent decline in revenue last year. This may be in part due to their last two games being Pocket Camp and Fire Emblem Heroes, which released in 2017.
In all honesty, I’m not too sure what DeNA does exactly. They aren’t considered a developer, but a Mobile Portal Provider. Nintendo and The Pokémon Company appear to be the ones developing the games, themselves. My understanding so far is that their system is what allows non-app store based updates, news feeds, cloud saves and various microtransaction systems.
The fact that they are the ones announcing this Pokémon Mobile game seems odd. Perhaps they were not supposed to reveal this information but did so under the pressure of investors during a slump. Either way, let’s see where it leads.
