It’s no secret that Pokémon GO was a massive success. But sometimes we don’t realize just how big of a hit it was. Developers Niantic are worth a lot, more than Square Enix, Capcom, and Sega Sammy, believe it or not.
This revelation came from CEO of Tokyo-based game industry consultancy Serkan Toto.
“Pokemon Go company Niantic is said to be raising $200 million on a $3.9 billion valuation now.
That’s more than the current market capitalization of Square Enix, Capcom or Sega Sammy.”
It’s hard to imagine, really. We’re talking about the people behind Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Sonic the Hedgehog. So I took a look for myself. At this moment, the three companies are valued as follows
- Square Enix: $3.488 Billion
- Capcom: $2.253 Billion
- Sega Sammy: $3.319 Billion
Sure enough, Niantic’s $3.9 billion exceeds all three. This is a tremendously impressive accomplishment. Niantic is best known for Ingress and Pokémon GO. All of the other companies in question have far more extensive libraries of common gaming names behind their belt.
Next time someone says that no one likes Pokémon GO, show them this.
