Well, no one is perfect. Niantic has been doing amazingly about promoting healthy gameplay during the pandemic. Up until this latest promo with Gucci, that is. But don’t worry, they fixed their mistake.
Earlier in the week, Niantic announced a new collaborative item within Pokémon GO. Participating players could unlock North Face and Gucci brand clothing, including shirts, hats, and bags. They weren’t easy to get either. They could only be found in certain major cities. If you were in the UK, you could only find them in London, specifically.
Well, the whole thing has been cancelled. Not long after launching the promo, Niantic shut it down. The items can no longer be found in any PokéStops. Instead, users have to input a promo code in-game to redeem the items. Fortunately, this means that anyone in the world can unlock the items without going anywhere.
A statement made by the Japanese Gucci Twitter explained that the promotional event was ended prematurely due to the continued spread of the Coronavirus infection. They then offered the promo code: GXSD5CJ556NHG
It’s kind of funny, in a sad way. You can tell that both companies assumed that the pandemic would be settled and contained by now. When it wasn’t they kicked the event off anyway. After a week of watching, they realized it was a bad idea to encourage people to populate major cities.
It was wise for them to cancel the promotion, even wiser to share it with everyone via promo code. Now everyone can get the clothing safely.
In the meantime, Gucci is selling real life versions of these outfits (a common thing for clothing promos in Pokémon GO). You can find more about that here. We can’t imagine they will be very affordable though.
