The area of Tojinbo in Japan has been a notorious spot for suicides over the years. There, steep, rocky cliffs overlook the Sea of Japan. It has become a tourist destination because of the sights as well as the grim atmosphere. Almost 200 people have committed suicide on the cliffs over the last decade. Now, though, the feeling of Tojinbo has changed. And it’s all because of Pokemon GO.
Before the game’s launch, the site would be abandoned by late afternoon. Now, though, there is substantial foot traffic in the area, even later in the evening. According to the Japan Times, volunteers for suicide prevention have noticed the change. Instead of somber cliffs, there are now locals in the area spinning PokeStops and catching Pokemon. It doesn’t quite fit the standards of “place to commit suicide.”
