It’s been four years since the launch of Pokémon GO. Skyrocketing into one of the most popular mobile games of all time as soon as it launched, it’s established itself as a staple example of what AR mobile games can be.
To celebrate this, while also promoting the global digital Pokémon GO Fest for this year, Niantic released a new trailer. And believe it or not, the trailer is reportedly directed by Rian Johnson, film director of movies like Star Wars and Knives Out.
On the surface, it appears to be a standard commercial promoting GO fest. It’s not until we looked closer at the promo art posted alongside the video did we discover something interesting: A number of gen 6 Pokémon are displayed among the crowd.
With over 1,000 different Pokémon at this point, Niantic has been adding in missing Pokémon from the mobile game one generation at a time. This leads to waves of new, previously unavailable Pokémon to appear in the game. Oftentimes, these updates are teased through promotional art and online posts just like this.
