During the first week that Pokemon GO came out, I noticed something changed about the city I live in. Specifically, many parking lots for restaurants suddenly became eternally packed. Of course, this wasn’t a coincidence. And I didn’t really notice until I decided to grab a bite to eat and thought, “Oh, I may as well find a place with a Poke Stop or gym.” This isn’t just a one-off thing, either. CNBC even recently covered a story of a man’s local business seeing surging business from the app.
Of course, not all businesses can be so lucky. For every customer who the nearby Burger King to take advantage of a Poke Stop, there’s one less customer for the McDonald’s down the street. The other thing I specifically noticed was that if a parking lot wasn’t packed, it was tragically empty. Given, this may not be the case if Niantic continues to alienate gamers. Even though, many businesses are having to deal with unexpected losses.
