Early Thursday, users started experiencing issues with Pokemon GO servers. Not long afterward, the official Pokemon GO Twitter account posted a confirmation of these reports. There was some kind of issue with the server. Unfortunately, they didn’t go into any more detail.
Without much to go on, players were left in the dark. Was it a DDoS attack? Did Niantic try to apply an update that went south? There was no telling what really happened. It could have even been that someone tripped over a cord.
Regardless, it only took Niantic almost 2 hours to get back with us. Once again on their Twitter, they gave trainers the all clear. Finally, we were free to catch Pokemon again.
In the grand scheme of things, 2 hours isn’t very long. I’m glad to see the issue was fully under control quickly. It very easily could have been much worse.
