One of the most ignored features of Pokemon GO has to be the Augmented Reality feature. It was cool at first to see a zubat flying in front of me, but having to hold up my phone while aiming pokeballs proved tiresome, and it quickly became easier to just disable the AR feature. With Apple’s ARKit technology inside iOS 11 devices, Niantic will be revamping the AR aspect to create a more dynamic experience.
Referred to as AR+, the new feature will give iPhone and iPad users more depth to the AR. For example, players can step closer or farther away to the Pokemon, instead of being a fixed distance. Pokemon might even run away if you get too close.
To incentivize users to try out this new function, Pokemon GO offers a capture bonus for being an Expert Handler, which will yield additional EXP if you catch a Pokemon close up without scaring it away.
Unfortunately, this feature is limited to Apple devices that support iOS 11. We first saw the AR+ features at the Worldwide Developers Conference back in June.
The AR+ feature is not yet available to players, but it will be soon. Be sure to check back for when the update happens.
