Pokémon held a press conference recently, detailing all of their upcoming business plans. This included a number of new reveals. The biggest announcement was with the new Pokémon Sleep and the Pokémon Go Plus + Device.
The Pokémon Company announced Pokémon Sleep, a new way to “transform sleep into entertainment.” This is a new mobile app developed with Select Button (the team behind Magikarp Jump) that, to our understanding, connects the player with their Pokémon through sleep, much like how Pokémon GO did with walking.
To be honest, we still aren’t sure what exactly this app does. They say it will turn sleep into entertainment, but the announcement lacked any details or gameplay footage. So as to HOW it works, we don’t know.
Release for the Pokémon Sleep app remains unsaid.
What we DO know is that it uses a new piece of hardware to do it. Introducing the Pokémon Go Plus + device. Yes, that’s the real name. This small, round disc acts as an upgraded version of the original Pokémon GO Plus device. When walking around, the central button will light up to signal a nearby PokéStop or Pokémon. This updated version includes an accelerometer that will reportedly track the user’s sleeping habits and integrate it with the Pokémon Sleep app.
Price and release date of the Pokémon GO Plus + device has not been stated.
To celebrate the announcement of Pokémon Sleep, Niantic announced a new event, staring Snorlax, the sleepy Pokémon! Starting now and running until Monday, June 3, 2019, Snorlax can be found all over the map in Pokémon GO as a wild Pokémon! They will be asleep during the encounter but will wake up when you capture them.
Any Snorlax caught during this event will know an exclusive move: Yawn. This move will lull the enemy Pokémon to sleep a few turns later.
The press conference announced a variety of other details, listed below.
- Pokémon Quest will be released as an improved version in China
- Pokémon Home, a cloud-based Pokémon storage system similar to the Pokémon Bank. This one supports mobile, 3DS, and Switch interactions, and even trading with other trainers using your smartphone.
- Pokémon Masters is an upcoming mobile game that lets players engaging in battles with some of the best known Pokémon masters of past games. Set to release on iOS and Android in 2019.
This is a lot of great information for the future of Pokémon!
