So, for those of you that remember Ruslan Sokolovsky, please feel free to continue reading. For those of you that have never heard that name, read this, and then feel free to hop back in.
Well, it looks like the Russian blogger has finally gotten the verdict. After his trial, Sokolovky was given a suspended sentence of three and half years. If you aren’t familiar with the legal system, don’t worry. A suspended sentence is a sentence given by a judge that doesn’t include prison time. The blogger will basically be on probation for three and half years. If he doesn’t do anything illegal in that time period, the judge will not send him to jail.
This is great news for Sokolovky who was on trial for inciting religious hatred. After the verdict was read, Sokolovsky said that he was so glad that his trial became popular. He thanked everybody for covering the story so closely and was quoted saying that without all the coverage, “I would probably have been sent to prison.”
While I think that this was an absolutely crazy trial to begin with, and I know many others have the same belief, I’m glad that the man was able to get out of this whole thing without a prison sentence. If you watch his YouTube videos, the content might be changed pretty drastically for the next three or four years.
